Blog O Bitters

Recently I've been enlightened on a staple found in most bars across the globe: bitters.  They are all over menus these days, and it was only recently that I began my education on these high-octane tools.

"Bitters are seasonings for a drink, like salt and pepper are for food," Warren Bobrow said to me recently.  And who better to know about bitters since they came to life as a restorative than the author of Apothecary Cocktails.

Immediately, I "got" bitters.  A few drops in a cocktail change its complexion, adding a flavor apart from the spirit and other ingredients, enhancing and improving the entire drink.  An Old Fashioned and a Manhattan both contain a few drops of Angostura Bitters, perhaps the best-known brand on the market.  Based in Trinidad, Angostura was originally created to help soldiers with upset stomachs in the Simón Bolívar army.

So find your flavor and go with it!  Warren introduced me to The Bitter Truth Old Time Aromatic Bitters.  Trying to coax spring from this eternal winter was not easy, but Fruitations Rio Red Grapefruit certainly does the trick!  I added a few drops to my Sunday Brunch Greyhound and it was off to the races!  The citrus was highlighted with WOW.
